Markings:

The canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher. The image reads well beneath thick, glossy varnish that has yellowed slightly. stretcher bar marks are slightly visible around all 4 edges, and a line of discolored retouching on the man's proper right shoulder is visible, but not distracting. Two old repaired tears are visible as spots of uneven texture at the right side of the beard and at the lower right corner. Under UV inspection, the varnish is milky and difficult to read through, but retouching to address frame abrasion is visible at the top left corner, on the bottom edge, and other retouching is concentrated in the upper right background. The painting would possibly benefit from a cleaning and fresh varnish. Offered in an ebonized wood frame with gilt linings.
